Slade Farm:

This beef and sheep farm at Southerndown, South Glamorgan, is run by Peter Davies and extends to 810 acres, with an additional tenancy of approx. 300 acres nearby. The decision to convert to organic production was taken in 1999 and this together with Tir Gofal, ensures that the best environmental practices operate within the holding.

Enterprises on the holding include:

  • 150 continental cross breed beef cows and 200 followers, mainly Simmental or Marchigiana which were introduced 10 years ago. There are plans to increase this number to a total of 450 in 2004.

  • 1000 Romney ewes

  • 140 acres of arable rotation crops, including white clover leys, Lucerne under-sown with barley, red clover hybrid ryegrass leys, spring wheat and Tir Gofal root crops.

Events in 2003 have included a review of the Tir Gofal Scheme and organic farming systems, followed by Winter Housing and Feeding including Peter Davies' new sheds (see above). In 2004, Homoeopathy and Animal Health Plans was  the topic for 29th January (see report below) followed by a review of IGER grass and clover breeding programme on 17th March.
