Organic milk production. Information leaflet 1: Farm production and
performance
Cynhyrchu llaeth organig. Taflen wybodaeth 1: Cynnyrch a pherfformiad y fferm
| Abstract: |
The experimental dairy farm at Ty Gwyn,
Trawsgoed in Ceredigion, began conversion to organic production in 1992. A
crop rotation based on ryegrass/clover leys and cereals cut for whole-crop
silage was established on 70% of the farm, the remaining fields being
maintained as permanent pasture with strip-seeding of clover as necessary.
Drawing on the results obtained at Trawsgoed, an account is given of the
conversion of a dairy farm, from the point of view of soil fertility, crop
production and animal production.
Although herbage production and stocking density fell during the
conversion period, by the third year of organic management they had
substantially recovered and milk production/ha was similar to what it had been under 380
kg N/ha. Home-grown forages (grazed and conserved) contributed 84% of the
annual feed requirements and organic feeds 90% of the total ration.
