Newidiadau i Gynllun Ffermio Organig

Cymru Mae Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru wedi cyhoeddi newidiadau i Gynllun Ffermio Organig Cymru er mwyn symud ffermio organig yn ei flaen yng Nghymru. Amlinellir newidiadau i’r cynllun ar y wefan yn fan hyn.

    Pan fydd y Cynllun Ffermio Organig yn agored ar gyfer ceisiadau, bydd Canolfan Organig Cymru yn cyhoeddi gwybodaeth i ffermwyr gan esbonio sut y bydd cynllun newydd yn gweithio, yn fan hyn

Sioe Gwir Flas Cymru

Cyflwynwyd bwyd o Gymru i siopwyr a oedd wrthi’n stocio ar gyfer y Nadolig drwy raglen deledu ar sianel siopa’r DU, PVC. Dyma ddathlu pen blwydd cyntaf ei Sioe Gwir Flas Cymru. Bu saith cwmni, Welsh Farm Organics, Clams Cakes, Castle Choclates, Siwgr a Sbeis, Cawsiau o Gymru, Harvies Pies a’r Patchwolrk Traditional Food Company, yn ymddangos ar y sioe fyw. Beirniaid iau wrth eu boddau â Daioni

Mae Trioni – a ddyfeisiodd y diodydd llaeth â blas i blant – wedi ennill gwobr ragoriaeth wedi’i beirniadu gan banel o blant 5 i 12 oed. Enwebwyd Trioni Cyf. sy’n cynhyrchu nwyddau llaeth organig â blas Daioni fel y ddiod orau i blant yn y Gwobrau Rhagoriaeth mewn Bwyd a drefnir gan gylchgrawn The Caterer and Hotelkeeper. Mae’r gwobrau blynyddol yn cydnabod rhagoriaeth mewn cynnyrch sydd wedi’i anelu at y diwydiant gwasanaeth bwyd ac fe’i beirniedir gan brif gogyddion a beirniaid bwyd. Mae categori’r plant, a noddir gan 3663, hefyd yn cael ei feirniadu gan banel iau a fu’n frwd ynglŷn â Daioni â blas siocled, gan ddweud fod blas hyfryd arni, a’i bod yn drwchus ac yn llawn swigod”. Cynllun Effeithiolrwydd y Gadwyn Gyflenwi

Mae Canolfan Organig Cymru’n gweithio â busnesau organig i gyflwyno cais i’r gronfa hon i gynnal gwaith ar y gadwyn gyflenwi organig yng Nghymru. Cynhaliwyd cyfarfod â rhai busnesau a chynhyrchwyr organig ac mae Canolfan Organig Cymru bellach yn tynnu at ei gilydd syniadau a dewisiadau. Bwriedir cynnal cyfarfod arall i fynd â’r cynnig yn ei flaen ar gyfer mis Ionawr pan fydd y cwmpas wedi’i ddatblygu ac wedi dod yn gliriach. Mae’r cynllun hwn yn agored i gyrff a busnesau hyd uchafswm o gymorth 50%: Bydd Canolfan Organig Cymru yn gymwys i dderbyn cymorth 100%. Mwy o wybodaeth.

 

Gŵyl Fwyd Cegaid Cymru

Mae gŵyl fwyd a diod leol newydd o Bowys â’r siroedd cyffiniol yn cael ei threfnu gan Glasu ar gyfer 26 a 27 Ebrill 2008. Bydd y digwyddiad, Cegaid Canolbarth Cymru, yn cael ei gynnal ochr yn ochr â sioe wlân a ffibrau naturiol Wonderwool Wales ym maes y Sioe yn Llanelwedd. Bydd atyniadau’n cynnwys dros 50 o stondinau cynhyrchwyr crefft, selebs ac arddangosiadau gan gogyddion lleol, Ready, Steady, Powys, cystadleuaeth goginio’r Clybiau Ffermwyr Ifainc a gweithgareddau bwyd i blant. Gwyliwch y gofod hwn am fwy o wybodaeth! Er mai’r dyddiad cau swyddogol am geisiadau stondinau yw 7 Rhagfyr, mae amser o hyd i fwy o gynhyrchwyr organig Canolbarth Cymru i wneud cais. Organig ar y fwydlen yn ysgolion Sir Gâr

Ddydd Iau 6 Rhagfyr gyda chefnogaeth lawn Cyngor Sir Gâr, roedd pryd o fwyd organig ar fwydlen holl ysgolion cynradd y sir. Y pryd hwn oedd y pumed mewn cyfres o brydau bwyd ysgol arddangos sy’n anelu at helpu sefydlu cadwyni cyflenwi lleol trwy gynnwys staff y cyngor, cynghorwyr, llywodraethwyr, rhieni, ffermwyr a thyfwyr bwyd. Mae’r digwyddiadau hyn a drefnir fel rhan o brosiect RAFAEL yr UE sy’n hyrwyddo bwyd dilys yn ardaloedd arfordirol yr Iwerydd yn Ewrop, hefyd yn arddangos cyfleoedd ac anawsterau wrth gael hyd i ffynonellau cynnyrch organig lleol ar gyfer prydau o fwyd ysgol. Ymunodd Canolfan Organig Cymru amser cinio yn ysgol gynradd Peniel yn Sir Gâr. Cafodd y plant, y cogyddion a’r athrawon flas mawr ar bastai’r bugail a moron organig, y cogyddion. Gofynnodd y plant lawer iawn o gwestiynau am fwyd organig a rhoddwyd taflen i bob un gyda mwy o wybodaeth am ffermio organig.

New organic statistics website

Organic Centre Wales has updated the Organic Statistics webpage. Please follow the link www.organic.aber.ac.uk/statistics 

 

Revisions to the Organic Farming Scheme

The Welsh Assembly Government has announced amendments to the Welsh Organic Farming Scheme in order to progress organic farming in Wales. Changes to the scheme are outlined on the website here. When the OFS is open for applications, OCW will produce information for farmers explaining how the new scheme will work, on this page.

 

Food and drink 'Oscars'

More than 40 food and drink companies in Wales have received the industry’s highest accolade – the True Taste Food and Drink Awards 2007-2008.

True Taste of Wales Show

Shoppers looking to stock up for Christmas were presented with Welsh food via a television programme on UK TV shopping channel QVC. This marks the first anniversary of its True Taste of Wales Show. Seven Welsh companies: Welsh Farm Organics, Clams Cakes, Castle Chocolates, Siwgr a Sbeis, Cheeses From Wales, Harvies Pies and The Patchwork Traditional Food Company, were featured in the live show. Junior judges delight in Daioni

Trioni, whose organic flavoured milk drinks were designed for children, has won an award for excellence judged by a panel of 5 to 12 year-olds. Trioni Ltd, which produces the Daioni range of organic flavoured milk, was named best children’s drink in the Excellence in Food Awards run by The Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine.

The annual awards recognise excellence in products aimed at the food service industry and is judged by top chefs and food critics. The 3663 sponsored children’s category is also judged by a junior panel who enthused about the chocolate Daioni saying it had a “nice flavour, thick and bubbly”. More information

Supply Chain Efficiencies Scheme

Organic Centre Wales is working with organic businesses to submit an application to this fund to support organic supply chain work in Wales. A meeting with some organic businesses and producers has been held, and OCW is now drawing together ideas and options. Another meeting to take the proposal forward is planned for January when the scope has developed and become clearer. This scheme is open for organisations and businesses at a maximum of 50% support: OCW, being a public sector body, will qualify for up to 100% support. More information.

 

Mid Wales Mouthful Food Festival

A new festival of local food and drink from Powys and bordering counties is being organised by Glasu for April 26-27 2008. The event, Mid Wales Mouthful, will take place alongside the Wonderwool Wales show of wool and natural fibre at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells. Attractions include over 50 stalls of artisan producers, celebrity and local chef demonstrations, ‘Ready Steady Powys’, YFC cookery competition and children’s food activities. Organic on the menu in Carmarthen schools

On Thursday 6 December, with the full support of Carmarthenshire County Council, all the primary schools in the county had an organic meal on the menu. The meal was the fifth in a series of demonstration school meals aiming to help establish local supply chains by involving council staff, councillors, governors, parents, farmers and growers. These events, organised as part of the EU RAFAEL project which promotes authentic food in the Atlantic coastal areas of Europe, also demonstrate the opportunities and difficulties in sourcing local organic produce for school meals. Organic Centre Wales joined in at dinnertime at Peniel primary school in Carmarthenshire. Organic shepherds’ pie and organic carrots went down very well with the children, cooks and teachers. The children asked lots of questions about organic food and they were each given a leaflet with more information about organic farming.

Yn ôl data A C Nielsen Scantrack, mae’r sector llaeth organig wedi codi 11.5% o ran cyfaint yn ystod y flwyddyn hyd at 6 Hydref. Mae Yeo Valley, un o brif frandiau’r farchnad laeth organig, wedi sylwi:

• bod defnyddwyr bellach yn yfed mwy na 200m litr o laeth organig y flwyddyn

• bod llaeth organig bellach yn werth £150m, 16% yn uwch na’r 12 mis blaenorol

• bod cyfaint ei frand llaeth organig ei hun yn tyfu 147% o flwyddyn i flwyddyn yn ôl data diweddaraf y cwmni

    Yn ôl Ben Cull, Cyfarwyddwr Marchnata Yeo Valley: “Mae manteision moesegol ac amgylcheddol cryf o blaid llaeth organig sy’n apelio at nifer cynyddol o ddefnyddwyr, ond bob tro y ceir ymchwil newydd sy’n dangos budd maethlon cynnyrch organig, bydd y gwerthiant yn llamu ymlaen ymhellach.” Organic Inform

 

Calon Wen yn cwrdd â defnyddwyr llaeth organig

Bu Calon Wen yn trefnu digwyddiad Dewch i Gwrdd â’n Ffermwyr yn Llundain. Bu tri ffermwr yn ymweld â 12 cangen o Waitrose yn Llundain rhwng 26 a 27 Tachwedd 2007. Mae gan Calon Wen ddiddordeb mewn cwrdd â defnyddwyr ac mewn ateb unrhyw gwestiynau sydd ganddynt. Buont yn arddangos eu Eco–pak newydd gan gynnig pac am ddim wrth brynu jwg yr Eco-pak. Yn ôl Roger Kerr: “cafodd y digwyddiad groeso mawr a chawson ni adborth arbennig o dda .” Mae Calon Wen yn edrych i gynnal y digwyddiad mewn lleoliadau eraill. Yn sicr, mae’r farchnad i laeth organig yno. Sonia Roger Kerr fod Ffederasiwn y Grwpiau Llaeth wedi sicrhau grant MDC i ymdrin â marchnata generig. Yn ôl Roger, dyma’r tro cyntaf i’r grwpiau ffermwyr farchnata ar y cyd.

Mae porthiant yn parhau fel un o’r prif broblemau i gynhyrchwyr llaeth organig. Mae Roger Kerr yn hapus fod cwmnïau bwyd bellach yn fodlon edrych ar gydymffurfio â deddfwriaeth 100% porthiant organig. Ymddengys mai protein yw’r brif broblem. Yn ôl Roger Kerr, “mae pris llaeth wedi codi, ond gyda chostau uchel y porthiant, nid yw’r ffermwyr yn elwach o hyd.” Mae yma ffermwyr sy’n dal i fod wrthi yn troi’n organig er bod rhai wedi oedi troi o ganlyniad i brisiau bwyd.

Trioni yn adrodd

Mae Trioni yn lansio gwefan newydd ar 9 Rhagfyr. Bydd y wefan yn dangos yr holl wybodaeth ddiweddaraf ynglŷn â lle i brynu eu diod llaeth â blas a’r holl ddatblygiadau diweddaraf a’r gwobrau a enillwyd gan Trioni. Mae Trioni wedi arwyddo nawdd gan Academi Chelsea. Y cytundeb yw i gyflenwi llaeth â blas am 2 dymor. Ar ben hynny, mae tîm Bolton Wanderers wedi dangos diddordeb mewn prynu diodydd llaeth blas gan Trioni ac maent bellach ar gael ym mhob Coop yng Nghymru. Maent yn gobeithio gwerthu’r cynnyrch mewn siopau yn Lloegr yn ogystal. Gyda’r cynnydd yn y galw, mae Trioni yn edrych ar gynhyrchu mwy o laeth y flwyddyn nesaf.

Organic milk sales push milk market growth

According to A C Nielsen Scantrack data, the organic milk sector has risen in volume by 11.5% in the year to 6th October. Yeo Valley, the leading brand in the organic milk market, has observed that:

• consumers now drink more than 200m litres of organic milk per year

• organic milk is now worth £150m, 16% ahead of the previous 12 months

• its own organic milk brand is growing 147% year on year in volume terms according to its most recent data.

    Ben Cull, Yeo Valley’s marketing director, said: “There are strong ethical and environmental benefits in favour of organic milk that appeal to a growing number of consumers, but each time there’s new research showing nutritional benefits, sales take a further leap forward.” Organic Inform

 

Calon Wen meets organic milk consumers

Calon Wen organized a ‘Come and Meet our Farmers’ event in London. Three farmers visited 12 London Waitrose branches on 26-27 November 2007. Calon Wen are interested to meet consumers and answer any questions they have. They demonstrated their new Ecopak and offered a free pack with the purchase of the Ecopak jug. Roger Kerr says: “ the event was very well received and we got very good feedback”. Calon Wen is looking at rolling out the event in other locations. The market for organic milk is there. Roger Kerr mentions that the Federation of Dairy Milk Groups have secured an MDC grant to address generic marketing. According to Roger, this is the first time that the farmers groups have done joint marketing .

    Feed remains one one of the main problems for organic milk producers. Roger Kerr is happy that feed companies are now willing to look at meeting the 100% organic feed legislation. Protein seems to be the main problem. Roger Kerr says:” the price of milk has moved up, but with the high feed costs the farmers are still not any better off”. There are still farmer’s in conversion although some have delayed conversion as a result of feed prices.

New family sized packs of Yeo Valley organic cheese

Milk Link’s The Cheese Company and Yeo Valley have launched a new range of family sized packs of organic cheddar. It is made at The Cheese Company’s Taw Valley creamery and is described as a major step forward in expanding and developing the Yeo Valley organic cheese brand. Farmers Guardian 

 

Trioni reports

Trioni launches a new website on 9 December. The website will show all the latest information on where to buy their flavoured milk drink, and all the latest developments and awards Trioni has won. Trioni has signed a sponsorship with the Chelsea academy. The agreement is for two seasons to supply flavoured milk. Furthermore, the Bolton Wonderers team, has shown interest in buying flavoured milk. Trioni’s flavoured milk drinks are now available in all Coops in Wales. They are hoping to sell their produce in stores in England as well. With the increase in demand Trioni are looking at producing more milk next year.

Mae Norton Organic Grains yn adrodd bod y farchnad wedi sefydlogi. Bu tywydd yr hydref yn braf ac mae llawer iawn o ffermwyr wedi cadw eu hanifeiliaid allan. O ganlyniad, mae’r fasnach newydd yn araf deg. Mae costau porthiant yn dal i fod yn broblem i lawer iawn o ffermwyr. Mae prisiau allbwn manwerthu wedi codi ond dim yn ddigon uchel i adlewyrchu costau porthiant cynhyrchwyr da byw. Mae stoc porthiant sy’n cael ei fewnforio wedi gwella ac o hyd ceir digon o stoc ar gyfer y misoedd sydd ar ddod. Pan ofynnwyd iddo fwrw golwg ymlaen i ddeddfwriaeth 100% porthiant organig ar ddiwedd eleni, dywed Nigel Gossett, “bydd problemau gyda molasau a gynhyrchir yn y DU a fawr ddim yn yr UE. Mewnforir y rhan fwyaf o’r UD, Yr Ariannin ac yn y blaen. Fodd bynnag, nid oes digon ar gael yn organig i gyflenwi holl brynwyr y DU.

   Y prisiau cyfredol ar gyfer y rheini sy’n prynu grawn organig yw:

Norton Organic Grain reports the market has stabilised. The autumn weather has been fine and many farmers have kept their animals out. As a result new trade is slow. Feed costs are still a problem to many farmers. Retail output prices have risen but not enough to reflect livestock producers’ feed costs of. The stock of imported feed has improved and there is still sufficient stock available for the coming months. When asked to look ahead to the 100% organic feed legislation at the end of this year, Nigel Gossett says: “there will be problems with molasses which is used by a large number of livestock producers. There is no organic molasses produced in the UK and little in the EU. The majority is imported from USA, Argentina, etc. However there is not enough available organically to supply all UK buyers.”

    Current prices for those buying organic cereals are: Feed Wheat: £310 delivered. Oats: £280 delivered. Barley: £290-300 delivered. Beans: £335 delivered.

Mae ‘na gyfle anferthol i werthu cig oen Cymreig a chig oen y morfa. Mae llawer iawn o brynwyr, megis bwytai a delîs, wedi gofyn i ni gyflenwi hyn. Mae galw mawr hefyd am ein porc. Er bod prisiau porthiant wedi cael effaith negyddol ar y busnes, mae fferm y Rug yn edrych tua’r dyfodol yn gadarnhaol iawn. Mae fferm y Rug yn chwilio am gynhyrchwyr prydau parod o ansawdd da. Yn ôl Nigel Elgar, Cyfarwyddwr Cynhyrchwyr Graig Farm: “Er bod y galw am gig eidion organig a’i bris wedi bod yn sefydlog dros y misoedd diwethaf, mae’r sector defaid wedi profi cryn dipyn o broblemau o ganlyniad i’r amhariad ar y cyflenwi a achoswyd gan y tywydd gwael yn yr haf a fu’n rhwystr i’r cynhyrchu, a ddilynwyd gan gyfyngiadau Clwy Traed a Genau a rwystrodd y marchnata. O ganlyniad, dros yr ychydig fisoedd diwethaf, cafwyd gorgyflenwi difrifol ar yr un pryd â’r prisiau isaf erioed yn hanesyddol am gig oen organig. O dan yr amgylchiadau gwael hyn, mae rhai proseswyr wedi achub y cyfle i geisio adennill rheolaeth lwyr dros brisio a chyflenwi trwy gyfyngu’n arw ar niferoedd wythnosol yr ŵyn sy’n dod o Grwpiau Cynhyrchwyr cenedlaethol, annibynnol. Mae’n amlwg nad yw hyn er budd unrhyw gynhyrchwr gan fygwth yr holl a gyflawnwyd gan y Grwpiau Cynhyrchwyr cenedlaethol, megis y prisiau lleiaf gwarantedig ar ôl Nadolig ac yn wir mae’n bygwth hyfywedd ariannol cyffredinol ffermio cig oen organig. “

“Mae’r sefyllfa eleni’n eithafol, a gobeithio na fydd yn cael ei ailadrodd. Fodd bynnag, mae’n dangos gyda chyflenwi a’r galw am gig oen mewn ecwilibriwm bron, y gallai anogaeth i fwy o ffermwyr defaid i droi’n organig gael effaith drychinebus ar hyfywedd ariannol cynhyrchu cig oen organig fel y mae. Rhug organic farm reports

The demand for organic meat is buoyant, especially in London, says John Edwards of Rhug farm. He says Rhug are continuously trying to identify market opportunities and adds: “Our main focus is on wholesalers. There is a massive opportunity for sales of Welsh lamb and salt marsh lamb. We have been requested by many buyers, such as restaurants and delis to supply this. (Our) pork is also in high demand”. While feed prices have negatively affected the business, Rhug farm looks at the future very positively. Rhug farm is looking for good quality ready meal producers. Graig Farm reports

Nigel Elgar, Director of Graig Farm Producers writes: “Whilst demand and price for organic beef has been stable over recent months the sheep sector has experienced significant problems as a result of disruptions to supply caused by poor summer weather holding up production, followed by F&M restrictions delaying marketing. As a result, over the past couple of months there has been a serious over-supply situation, combined with all-time historically low prices for organic lamb. In this difficult environment, some processors have used the opportunity to try to regain full control over pricing and supply by severely restricting weekly lamb numbers from national Independent Producer Groups. This is patently not in the interest of any producers, and threatens the many achievements of national Producer Groups, such as guaranteed minimum prices after Christmas, and indeed threatens the overall financial viability of organic sheep farming. “

    “The situation this year is extreme and hopefully will not be repeated, however it does demonstrate that with lamb supply and demand at or near equilibrium, encouraging more sheep farmers to convert may have disastrous effect on the financial sustainability of existing organic lamb production. Whilst the membership of Graig Producers have demonstrated their commitment to Independent Group marketing, farmers who supply direct to processors undermine not only their own financial future but everyone else's. Organic meat cannot be viewed on a Welsh only basis as it has been demonstrated this year that supplies of organic lamb have been brought in from other parts of the UK where Independent Group marketing is not yet strong. The small commission charge made by Independent Groups, essential if they are to carry out all their duties, is insignificant compared to the cut in prices proposed by the processors this winter and demonstrates the undeniable and significant net benefits of the groups to all producers . However, their effectiveness is compromised unless the majority of Organic farmers join one of the UK Independent Groups. The short term gain for some producers marketing direct to processors will only undermine everyone's long term financial viability.”

 

 

Waitrose want dairy-bred bull calves ‘finished’

Dairy calves born on Waitrose milk suppliers’ farms are to be finished for beef and veal in the UK under a new scheme announced this week. Heather Jenkins, the supermarket’s head of meat buying at Waitrose, said that it was a radical step but one which was right from an ethical and animal welfare perspective. She said Waitrose felt every animal produced should have a useful function within the food chain – and should not simply be regarded as a by-product. The new project is aimed to ensure that surplus calves from Waitrose’s standard and organic milk producer groups can be reared within a fully integrated supply chain. The initiative is in its infancy but the long term aim is that all surplus male calves would be grown for the UK beef and veal market. It is claimed it will offer dairy farmers a guaranteed market at a fair price for calves reared and finished through the Waitrose supply chain. Farmers Guardian 

 

Gap between ‘farmer’ price and supermarket price

An organic lamb farmer highlighted the gap between the price paid to farmers for premium lamb and the price supermarkets are charging consumers. He said: "Suffolk cross U3L lambs barely make £40. All [farmers] get is £2.55 a kilo. Then it goes on Tesco's shelves for £14.99 [a kilo]." Scottish Farmer added that the latest market data from the National Sheep Association showed the average percentage of the retail lamb price that goes back to the producer is just 36%. Cut out unnecessary imports: Buy local

Speaking at the Hybu Cig Cymru annual conference, chairman of HCC Rees Roberts reported that by increasing imports of lamb when a plentiful supply of fresh Welsh lamb was available, “supermarkets are depressing Welsh lamb prices, depressing demand in the UK and undermining farm gate prices further, as well as racking up unnecessary food miles and CO2 emissions in the process.” Mr Roberts stated that multiple retailers need to work to improve farm gate prices and show commitment to Welsh producers “by immediately cutting out unnecessary imports and by buying and selling more local food.” Western Mail 

 

Guaranteed price for hoggets

Organic meat producers in Scotland were given a boost yesterday with news that McIntosh Donald is to pay a guaranteed minimum price for organic hoggets next spring. The aim is to help retailers avoid imports of lamb during seasonal gaps by extending the marketing season for home-grown lamb. The Herald

 

Current UK livestock prices

The finished lamb market has been badly hit since the summer. Foot and Mouth caused the conventional market to be very depressed due to lack of exports, and the poor summer resulted in lambs finishing later - coinciding with the ‘glut’ period. This has had a knock-on effect on the organic price. Currently lamb producers have to wait for a slot, which doesn’t always happen, resulting in lambs sometime being out of size specification and the usual associated penalties. Prices for finished lambs for the week commencing 12/11/07 were:- Dunbia, Wales £2.65, St. Merryn Meats, Wales £2.45 and Welsh Country £2.20 per kilo deadweight. Few producers can refuse these prices at the moment but price monitoring is required to have a better overview of price development.

   Prices for store lambs and breeding stock are better. Store cattle have remained stable at approximately £1.40-£1.60 per kilo and finished cattle at approximately £3-£3.10.

Fruit and vegetable prices up by 23%

According to a report by retail researcher ESA in trade magazine The Grocer, the price of fruit and vegetables has soared to a three-year high. A typical shopping basket of the fresh produce now cost 23% more then it did in July. Daily Express (4 Dec, front page)

 

Supermarket price comparison

Research conducted by Riverford Organic Vegetables concludes that the way supermarkets source and sell fresh produce is unsustainable and is only likely to become more so as peak oil makes itself felt. Riverford Organic Vegetables published its research on 21 November, showing that supermarket organic produce is as much as 73% more expensive than the equivalent produce in a vegetable box delivered free to the doorstep. USA: organic industry grew by 21% in 2006

Organic foods are one of the fast-growing market segments within the food industry, with sales growing at an annual rate of 20.9% in 2006. Meanwhile, US sales of non-food organic products grew from $744 million in 2005 to $938 million in 2006, reflecting a 26% growth rate. Non-food categories include organic supplements, personal care products, household products and cleaners, pet food, flowers, and fibre products such as linens and clothing. Demand for meat, currently the smallest category, increased by 55 % last year. Dairy, the largest segment, had an increase in sales of 25 %. Bakery uses biodegradable bags

The Village Bakery has become the first UK bakery to package its breads in completely biodegradable and compostable bags. The bread bags are made from Mater-bi film that will break down to carbon dioxide, water and organic humus with no toxic residue. “The compostable bags are a natural step for us,” commented Lindsay Williams, Village Bakery Melmerby marketing manager. “Our entire range is organic and we are working hard to make all our cardboard packaging recycled and recyclable, so we are delighted to now have compostable bread bags. The Netherlands: sales take off again

Organic sales in the Netherlands were 258 million EUR in the first half of 2007, 15% up on the same period of the previous year. The total food market grew by 8.5%, reports Biologica’s Bio-Monitor. The organic share of the food market is currently 2 %. Sales by discounters Aldi, Lidl and Koopconsult boosted the result with 40 % growth over the previous year. The catering sector also expanded by 21 %. Sales achieved by organic food stores grew by 12 % to 106 million EUR.
