Cynhaliwyd y gynhadledd arddwriaethol gyntaf i’w threfnu gan Gynadleddau Garddwriaethol Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru 2008 ar y cyd â’r Ganolfan Defnydd Tir Amgen (CALU), Rhwydwaith Garddwriaethol Cymru (HNW), Canolfan Organig Cymru a Lantra, 28 Chwefror. Denodd y gynhadledd nifer fawr o gynadleddwyr. Estynnodd Elin Jones AC, y Gweinidog dros Faterion Gwledig groeso cynnes i holl aelodau’r sector garddwriaethol yng Nghymru. Cynhaliwyd gweithdai ar drosglwyddo technoleg, cyflenwi’r amlwerthwyr, cyflenwi lleol a chydweithio ynghyd ag addysg a hyfforddiant. Y casgliad oedd bod galw cynyddol am gynnyrch garddwriaethol yng Nghymru a bod y cyflenwad ar hyn o bryd yn ddiffygiol. Mae angen mwy o gefnogaeth i dyfwyr felly er mwyn cynyddu’r cyflenwad.

 

Rheoleiddio Honiadau Iechyd a Maethol

Mae Rheoliad (UE) Rhif 1924 2006 20 Rhagfyr 2006 ar honiadau maethol ynglŷn â bwydydd yn berthnasol i bob honiad maethol ac iechyd a wneir mewn deunydd cyfathrebu masnachol, gan gynnwys, ymysg pethau eraill, hysbysebu generig ar gyfer bwyd ac ymgyrchoedd hyrwyddo, megis y rheini sy’n cael eu cefnogi’n gyfan gwbl neu’n rhannol gan awdurdodau cyhoeddus.

    Nid yw’n berthnasol i ganllawiau neu gyngor dietegol a gyhoeddir gan awdurdodau a chyrff iechyd cyhoeddus, deunydd cyfathrebu anfasnachol a gwybodaeth yn y wasg ac mewn cyhoeddiadau gwyddonol. Rhaid i unrhyw honiadau maethol neu iechyd gael eu hawdurdodi ar ôl asesu gwyddonol.

Aberystwyth University goes organic

The University canteen TaMed Da started serving organic baguettes and salads from Wednesday 5 March 2008. The organic produce is sourced from Knobbly Carrot Company in Lampeter. Details 

 

Horticultural conferences

The first horticultural conference organized by the Welsh Assembly Government Horticulture Conferences 2008 in partnership with the Centre of Alternative Land Use (CALU), the Horticulture Network Wales (HNW), the Organic Centre Wales and Lantra was held on 28 February. The conference attracted a large number of delegates. Elin Jones AM, Minister for Rural Affairs extended a warm welcome to all members of the horticultural sector in Wales. Workshops were held on technology transfer, supplying the multiples, local supply and collaboration and education and training. It was concluded that there is an increasing demand for horticultural produce in Wales while the supply is currently lacking. More support for growers is therefore needed to increase the supply.

 

Regulation of health and nutritional claims

The Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 of 20 December 2006 on nutrition and health claims made on foods applies to all nutrition and health claims made in commercial communications, including inter alia generic advertising of food and promotional campaigns, such as those supported in whole or in part by public authorities.

    It does not apply to dietary guidelines or advice issued by public health authorities and bodies, non-commercial communications and information in the press and in scientific publications. Any nutrition claims or health claims needs to be authorised after scientific assessment.

    Meaning there must not be a reference or statement that organic food is nutritionally beneficial, containing more vitamin C, more dietary fibres or omega 3 fatty acids (non-exhaustive list). Furthermore, any claim that states, suggests or implies a relationship between a food category, a food or one of its constituents and health should be avoided and any health claim that states, suggests or implies that the consumption of a food category, a food or one of its constituents significantly reduces a risk factor in the development of a human disease should be avoided as well. Yn ôl Graig Producers, 2007 fu’r flwyddyn waethaf erioed mewn termau real o ran enillion ariannol ffermwyr defaid. Dywed Graig Farm ar ôl cynnwys chwyddiant, nad yw prisiau cig oen organig erioed wedi bod mor isel ers dechrau cadw cofnodion yn gynnar yn y 1990au.”

    Mae hyn o ganlyniad i nifer o ffactorau megis clwy’r traed a gennau, y tafod glas, cyfnod ŵyna cynhyrchiol a ddilynwyd gan haf gwlyb iawn a oedd yn golygu bod oedi o ran marchnata ynghyd â phrisiau porthiant uchel. Dyweda "y broblem waelodol yw bod cyflenwad y cig oen organig yn ystod y flwyddyn farchnata hyd at fis Rhagfyr 2007 yn fwy na’r galw. Dywedant fod prisiau hyd yn hyn yn 2008 wedi parhau ar y lefel isaf erioed mewn termau real oherwydd bod dylanwad grwpiau marchnata annibynnol i drafod y prisiau lleiaf, wedi’i danseilio gan gynhyrchwyr yn gwerthu’n uniongyrchol i broseswyr a oedd yn cyfyngu ar farchnata ŵyn trwy’r grwpiau yn ystod cyfnod y gormodedd.”

    Fodd bynnag, yn ôl Dunbia yn Llanybydder, sy’n cyflenwi Sainsburys yn bennaf, mae prisiau presennol cig oen organig yn dda. Mae’r pris wedi cynyddu 50 – 60c/kg rhwng y Nadolig a mis Chwefror. Dyma gyfnod pryd y bydd y galw’n goddiweddyd y cyflenwad. Medd Paul Edwards, rheolwr cyfarwyddwr Dunbia: “At ei gilydd, cyn y Nadolig mae cig oen gorffenedig organig yn cael ei orgyflenwi ac ar ôl y Nadolig mae yna brinder.” Mae’n pwysleisio’r angen am gyflenwad mwy cytbwys drwy gydol y flwyddyn. “Eleni mae Sainsburys wedi penderfynu cael 100% o’u cig oen o ffynonellau yng ngwledydd Prydain,” ychwanegodd. Yn ôl Paul Edwards, mae yna gryn dipyn o ffermwyr wrthi’n troi’n organig “ar eu llyfrau” ac mae diddordeb mawr yn cael ei ddangos gan ffermwyr sydd am droi’n organig. “Mae ‘na gryn botensial,” meddai, “ i ffermwyr defaid organig. Fodd bynnag mae’n rhaid cynnal premiwm ar gig oen organig.”

    Sylw Jonathan Rees o Welsh Farm Organics, sy’n marchnata cig oen organig yn bennaf trwy werthu ar y rhyngrwyd a marchnata uniongyrchol. yw: “Ar hyn o bryd mae llawer iawn o ŵyn ar ôl sydd heb eu gorffen. Mae cynhyrchwyr yn gyndyn o orffen ŵyn ar borthiant sydd wedi’i brynu i mewn. Byddai’n well ganddynt aros i’r glaswellt dyfu yn y gwanwyn i orffen yr ŵyn. Bydd hyn yn effeithio ar y cnwd ŵyn newydd,” Mae Jonathan ei hun yn bwydo 95% o’u hŵyn ar laswellt yn unig ac felly nid yw’r prisiau porthiant uchel yn effeithio cymaint arno. Yn ôl rhai o’r cynhyrchwyr sy’n cyflenwi Welsh Farm Organics, bydd nifer uchel o ŵyn organig yn mynd i’r farchnad gonfensiynol o ganlyniad i bris uchel porthiant.”

    Ar hyn o bryd mae Welsh Farm Organics yn gwerthu canran uchel o’i gig oen yn Llundain. “Mae pris cyfredol cig oen yn dda, “ medd Jonathan eto. “Fodd bynnag, bydd/dylai pris cig oen godi er mwyn gwneud iawn am y prisiau porthiant uchel. Rydym i gyd yn gwerthu tua 50 o ŵyn yr wythnos ond mae ŵyn gorffenedig yn mynd yn fwyfwy anodd i gael gafael ynddyn nhw.”

    Yn ôl Philip Hughes, Fferm Organig Stad y Rug: "Mae’r galw am ŵyn organig Cymreig yn ddigon cryf gan fod y carcasau’n gytbwys iawn. Mae’r galw am dorion eilradd ar gyfer prosesu organig yn cynyddu’n raddol.” Mae Philip yn disgwyl gweld cynnydd bach yn y pris yn 2008 ond ychwanega fod y galw’n arbennig o uchel ar adeg y Nadolig a hefyd y Pasg. Yn anffodus, meddai, nid yw fferm organig y Rug yn gallu diwallu’r galw pan fydd yn ei anterth adeg y Pasg.

   Dangosodd yr arolwg o gynhyrchwyr organig Cymreig a gynhaliwyd gan Ganolfan Organig Cymru yn ystod hydref 2007 fod tua 115,000 o ŵyn wedi'u gwerthu yn 2007, gyda tua 70% o ŵyn gorffenedig yn cael eu gwerthu gyda phremiwm organig; bron i 19% yn cael eu gwerthu fel rhai anorganig oherwydd eu bod yn cael eu cynhyrchu ar ddaliadau sydd wrthi’n troi’n organig, a dim ond 4% yn cael eu gwerthu fel rhai anorganig oherwydd diffyg marchnad organig. Fodd bynnag, arhosodd tua 13,500 o ŵyn gorau ar ffermydd yn ystod mis Tachwedd/Rhagfyr. Codwyd rhai pryderon hefyd ynglŷn â’r anawsterau wrth farchnata stoc organig gorffenedig oherwydd y cyfnodau hir wrth ddiddyfnu oddi ar gynhyrchion milfeddygol at afiechydon bwyta megis y clafr a pharasitiaid mewnol. Roedd sefyllfa’r ŵyn stôr yn llawer anos gyda tua 36,000 yn aros ar ffermydd. O'r tua 15,000 a werthwyd yn 2007, dim ond 56% gafodd eu gwerthau i ffermwr organig. Gwerthwyd 36% ymlaen i ffermwyr anorganig oherwydd diffyg galw am ŵyn stôr organig a gwerthwyd 8% fel rhai a oedd wrthi’n cael eu troi’n organig. Roedd gwerthu ŵyn ysgafn o breiddiau'r mynyddoedd yn broblem (fel ag y mae i'r sector confensiynol, yn enwedig oherwydd cyfynygiadau allforio) ond roedd yn well gan rai cynhyrchwyr eu gwerthu fel ŵyn stor yn hytrach na ŵyn ysgafn gorffenedig confensiynol, neu i'r cynllun gwaredu ŵyn ysgafn. Dengys niferoedd anifeiliaid wrthi’n cael eu troi’n organig y bydd y niferoedd sy'n mynd mewn i'r farchnad dros y ddwy flynedd nesaf yn codi'n sylweddol, felly bydd marchnadoedd a phrisiau yn debyg o fod yn her. Yn y cyd-destun hwn, mae prisiau cynyddol porthiant a chostau cynyrchu eraill yn peri pryder.

    Sylw Nic Lampkin, Cyfarwyddwr Canolfan Organig Cymru ac awdur arolwg o’r farchnad cig organig yng Nghymru y llynedd oedd bod: “cyfuniad o brisiau porthiant uchel a’r diffyg marchnad ar gyfer rhai o’r stoc, yn enwedig ŵyn ysgafn a stôr, yn bendant yn creu sefyllfa anodd i lawer iawn o gynhyrchwyr defaid, a bod llawer iawn o lawnbwn sy’n cael ei droi’n organig ar y gweill. Rhaid i gynhyrchwyr sy’n ystyried troi’n organig ar hyn o bryd fod yn ymwybodol y gall amodau’r farchnad fod yn anodd a rhaid iddynt fod yn siŵr bod ganddynt y lawnbwn i ddygymod â hyn os byddant yn penderfynu troi’n organig, ond cam gwag fyddai cyfyngu ar fynediad i Gynllun Amaeth Amgylcheddol Ffermio Organig neu ardystio organig os bydd cynhyrchwyr yn hyderus eu bod yn gwneud y penderfyniad cywir. Fel y nododd yr arolwg o’r farchnad y llynedd, mae angen llawer iawn mwy o waith ar ddatblygu marchnadoedd Cymreig ar gyfer cig oen organig sydd wedi’i frandio’n Gymreig, ar ddatblygu cyfleoedd caffael cyhoeddus organig ac ar ddatblygu i’r marchnadoedd allforio ar gyfer ŵyn ysgafn. Diolch i’r ymateb lluosog i’r arolwg cynhyrchwyr, mae bellach gennym ddata gwell o lawer ynglŷn â maint y broblem. Bydd Canolfan Organig Cymru’n cydweithio â HCC, LlCC a busnesau organig sydd â diddordeb ar y materion hyn yn ystod 2008.

The Welsh Organic Lamb Market

 

According to Graig Producers, 2007 has been the worst year ever, in real terms, regarding financial returns for sheep farmers. They say that “when factoring in inflation the price of organic lamb has never been as low since we started keeping records in the early 1990’s.”

    This is a result of a number of factors such as foot and mouth disease, bluetongue, a good lamb crop followed by a very wet summer delaying marketing and high feed prices. They say, “the underlying issue was that in the marketing year up until December 2007 the supply of organic lamb exceeded demand. They say that “prices so far in 2008 have continued at an all time low in real terms because the influence of independent marketing groups to negotiate minimum prices was undermined by producers selling direct to processors who were restricting marketing of lambs through the groups in the glut period.”

    However, according to Dunbia in Llanybydder, which mainly supplies Sainsburys, “current prices for organic lamb are good. The price has increased by 50-60p/kg between Christmas and February”. This is a period in which demand outstrips supply. Paul Edwards, managing director of Dunbia in Llanybydder says: “Generally, before Christmas there is oversupply of organic finished lamb and after Christmas there is a shortage”. He stresses the need for a more balanced supply throughout the year. He adds: “This year, Sainsburys has decided to source 100% British lamb”. According to Paul Edwards, there are quite a few farmers in conversion ‘on their books’ and there is a huge interest from farmers wishing to convert. He says: “There is a good potential for organic sheep farmers. However, a premium for organic lamb needs to be maintained.”

    Jonathan Rees of Welsh Farm Organics, who mainly markets organic lamb via internet sales and direct marketing, comments: “At the moment there are a lot of ‘unfinished’ lambs left. Producers are reluctant to finish lambs with bought in feed. They would rather wait for spring grass growth to finish their lambs. This will affect the new lamb crop." Jonathan himself feeds 95% of their lambs on grass only and is therefore less affected by high feed prices. According to some of the producers supplying into Welsh Farm Organics, a large number of the organic lambs are going into the conventional market as a result of the high feed price.

    Welsh Farm Organics is currently selling a large proportion of its lamb to London. Jonathan further says: “The current price for lamb is good. However, the price of lamb will/should be rising to compensate for high feed prices. We are selling approximately 50 lambs per week, but finished lambs are getting harder to get hold of.”

    Philip Hughes of Rhug Estate Organic Farm comments: "The demand for Welsh organic lamb is sufficiently strong as carcasses are well balanced. The demand for secondary cuts for organic processing is slowly increasing". He says that he expects to see a small price increase in 2008 and adds that demand is especially high at Christmas and Easter. According to Philip Hughes, Rhug Estate organic Farm is unfortunately unable to meet the peak demand of Easter.

    The survey of Welsh organic producers carried out by Organic Centre Wales in autumn 2007 indicated that, of the estimated 115,000 lambs sold in 2007, around 70% of finished lambs were being sold with an organic premium; nearly 20% were sold as non-organic because they were in being produced by in-conversion holdings, and only 4% were sold as non-organic due to the lack of an organic market. However, an estimated 13,500 prime lambs remained on farms in November/December. Some concerns were raised over difficulties marketing organic finished stock due to the long withdrawal periods of veterinary products for treating diseases such as sheep scab and internal parasites. The situation for store lambs was much more difficult with an estimated 36,000 stores retained on farms. Of the estimated 15,000 sold in 2007, only 56% were sold to an organic producer. 36% were sold on to non-organic farmers due to a lack of demand for organic stores and 8% were sold as ‘in-conversion’. Light lamb sales from hill flocks were identified as a problem (as it is for the conventional sector, particularly given the export restrictions), but some producers preferred to sell them on as organic stores rather than as conventional finished light lambs or to the light lamb disposal scheme. The current numbers of in-conversion stock indicate that the number of organic lambs entering the market will rise significantly in the next two years, so markets and prices are likely to be challenging. In this context, rising feed and other production costs were a major concern.

    Nic Lampkin, Director of Organic Centre Wales and author of last year’s Welsh organic meat market review commented: “The combination of high feed prices and the lack of market for some stock, particularly light lambs and stores, is definitely creating a difficult situation for many sheep producers, and there is a lot of in-conversion capacity in the pipeline. Producers currently considering conversion need to be aware that market conditions can be difficult and be sure that they have the capacity to cope with this if they decide to convert, but it would be misplaced to restrict entry to the agri-environmental Organic Farming Scheme or to organic certification if producers are confident they are making the right decision. As last year’s market review identified, much more work is needed on developing Welsh markets for Welsh-branded organic lamb, on developing organic public procurement opportunities, and on developing export markets for light lamb. Thanks to the very high response to the producer survey, we now have much better data on the scale of the problem. Organic Centre Wales will be working with HCC, WAG and interested organic businesses on these issues during 2008.”

Bu Brian Walters, is-lywydd Undeb Ffermwyr Cymru, sydd hefyd yn ffermwr llaeth organig yn Sir Gaerfyrddin mewn rali ym Mrwsel gyda 4,500 o gynhyrchwyr llaeth o 15 o wledydd yr UE, i wrthdystio’n erbyn cynlluniau a all orfodi prisiau llaeth fferm i ostwng. Dywedodd fod y gyngres yn cynnig cyfle da i drafod a chymharu nifer o faterion yn y diwydiant llaeth. Thema gyffredinol dan drafodaeth oedd diffyg sefydlogrwydd pris llaeth, ac er gwaetha’r ffaith fod y rhan fwyaf o wledydd wedi gweld symudiad at brisiau uwch y litr, roedd y rhan fwyaf o ffermwyr llaeth yn nerfus ynglŷn â’r rhagolygon hirdymor.

    "Teimlai’r cynrychiolwyr fod ffurfio’r Bwrdd Llaeth Ewropeaidd yn gam pwysig at gael ffermwyr ar draws Ewrop i gydweithio i sicrhau pris llaeth a oedd uwchlaw costau cynhyrchu. Teimlai rhai gwledydd fod y cynnydd blynyddol yn y cwota llaeth a’i ddiddymu yn 2015 yn gam yn ôl. Datganiad i'r Wasg yr Undeb.

Milk producers in the EU

Brian Walters, vice president of the Farmers’ Union of Wales, who is also an organic dairy farmer in Carmarthenshire, attended a rally in Brussels of 4500 milk producers from 15 EU countries protesting against plans which may drive down farm milk prices. He said that the congress provided a good opportunity to discuss and compare a raft of dairy farming issues. A common theme discussed was the lack of stability in the milk price and, despite the fact that most countries had seen an upward shift in the price per litre, most dairy farmers were nervous about the long-term prospects.

"Delegates felt that the formation of an European Milk Board was an important step to getting farmers across Europe to work together to achieve a milk price above the cost of production. Some countries felt that the proposed annual increase in milk quota and its abolition in 2015 was a backward step. FUW press release

Conversion to organic arable

A recent Organic Centre Wales workshop in Tafarn y Gors Bach, Llanddeiniolen, provided information on rotation planning, controlling weeds and diseases, and selecting cereal varieties which are suitable for organic farms in less favoured areas. And now that organic compound feed prices are exceeding £350/tonne, as they have since late autumn 2007, producers are increasingly looking to grow their own oats, barley, triticale and even Wheat. Some are already doing so, confirming that cereals can be cultivated successfully in north west Wales. Norton Organic Grain reports

The market has slowed down. There is not a lot of grain left and protein and beans are scarce at the moment. Livestock producers are surviving on old contracts and putting off buying in, waiting for the feed prices to go down. Some livestock producers are protesting in Downing Street. Information has become available on the South American harvest which is of good quality but very expensive to buy. Soya derivatives are over £600 per tonne and wheat delivered is £350. “Wheat markets have been stable in February and prices have held as supply/demand appears to be balanced for the first quarter of the New Year. There has been some brisk off farm trade done at £290 to £300 ex farm depending on location and load size.” “Despite a bullish outlook for sellers, markets are set to remain volatile and will only settle when harvest is imminent. Certainly there will be more cereals planted in response to better prices but stocks are low and need to build again before any stability can be expected. Organic produce will remain in short supply and therefore we anticipate keen demand going forward, we just hope for a better yield after an indifferent growing season last year.” Guide prices for new crops: organic wheat is valued at around £270 ex farm, with oats, barley, and triticale at a £10 discount. Organic beef price increases

Sainsburys has raised the price it pays for organic beef by almost 10% to help counter increasing feed and energy costs. Steven Feehan, head of procurement for ABP, said the rise meant farmers would get about £100 extra for the average animal. "Organic producers have increasing costs associated with both the 100% organic feed rule implemented this year and the increased costs of organic straights and compounds." The Sainsburys/Anglo Beef Processors Producer Group’s 500 organic beef producers have a new minimum price of 340p/kg, up 30p/kg. The price holds good until July 31. Due to the seasonality of production, the minimum price will fluctuate between 330p to 310p/kg for the remainder of the grass season, before returning to the higher price thereafter. Beef is seeing strong demand globally which is pushing up prices for conventional beef. This has caused processors to increase the organic price to ensure that organic beef is not lost to the conventional market. The outlook is that demand for UK organic beef will continue to outstrip supplies and the market will remain buoyant for the foreseeable future. The Organic Beef & Sheep Development Group (OBSDG) is collating the most accurate figures available on organic beef and lamb production.

 

Small abattoirs under threat of closure

Proposals to make meat processing plants meet the full cost of meat hygiene inspections could spell the end of more small abattoirs. The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (Aims) has warned that the diminishing network of local abattoirs in England and Wales already down from 1,600 in 1975 to under 400 in 2001 – could face an eight-fold increase in inspection costs. Sales of organic chicken continue to increase

Sainsbury’s reported sales of free-range and organic chicken – as well as those birds whose treatment meets the RSPCA's Freedom Food scheme – have increased by 50% in response to TV programmes earlier this year. Waitrose saw sales of organic chicken increase by 31% with other free-range meat sales rise by 24%. Many Scottish consumers say they have been struggling to find any free-range or organic chicken. Biofach 2008

Some 46,484 trade visitors (2007: 45,469) streamed into the Nuremberg exhibition centre from 21-24 February to source information about the world market for organic products and natural personal care. Dutch organic farm area in decline

The total area under organic farming in the Netherlands fell by 1,344 hectares in 2007, a reduction of 3.3%, according to the Central Statistics Bureau (CBS), Vilt reports. Significantly, this is the first year the area has fallen since 1996. The number of organic farms fell by 66, or 5.5% last year. The national farmers' union, LTO, had been expecting a decline, but was surprised at the size of the drop. Chairman of the LTO's organic farming committee, Martin Wiersema, said a possible reason was the sharp reduction in the number of farm conversions in the past two years, with good prices in conventional farming giving producers less incentive to convert. Demand drives conversion to organics

Worldwide spending on organic food in 2007 will top the $40 billion mark for the first time, claims Amarjit Sahota of the London corporate consultant Organic Monitor. Although most of the world's regions report high growth rates, the largest growth in terms of turnover is seen in North America and Europe. Global Survey on Organic Agriculture 2008

The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and the Foundation Ecology and Agriculture (SÖL) presented the latest statistics of this year’s study titled “The World of Organic Agriculture: Statistics and Emerging Trends 2008” at BioFach 2008. Results from the study, taken from 135 countries, are now available and show how organic agriculture is developing rapidly worldwide. Results include:

Inter Bio Bretagne: The need for new organic farmers

The prospects for the organic agricultural sector are very encouraging from the point of view of consumption, according to Inter Bio Bretagne, France. Organic products are gaining importance in school cafeterias, the association explains, and will have reached 20% throughout the country by 2012. There is an annual increase of 15% for organic products in large and medium outlets (GMS in France), which shows the constant development of the perception of consumers in favour of organic farming, reports Greenplanet.
