Newidiadau i Gynllun Ffermio Organig Cymru

Mae Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru wedi cyhoedd newidiadau i Gynllun Ffermio Organig Cymru er mwyn i symud ffermio organig yn ei flaen yng Nghymru. Amlinellir newidiadau i’r cynllun yn ffeithlen newydd (heb ei chyfieithu eto)

 

Wyn iach i’w lladd, ond dim i’w bwyta

Bydd hyd at 500,000 o ŵyn mynydd o Gymru’n cael eu lladd a’u llosgi yn ystod yr ychydig wythnosau nesaf er mwyn osgoi trychineb o ran lles yr anifeiliaid. Mae’r cam yn dilyn cyfyngiadau a orfodwyd yn ystod yr achos clwyf traed a genau diweddaraf ac mae lladdfa debyg yn cynnwys hyd at 250,000 o ŵyn bellach yn digwydd yn yr Alban. Guardian

 

Siop fferm yn dod â’r organig i’r pentre

Daw saith mlynedd heb siop bentre i ben yn ne Penfro ar ddechrau’r mis nesaf. Mae’r teulu Rogers wedi penderfynu agor siop fferm a phentre sy’n arbenigo mewn cynnyrch organig lleol.

Mae Grant Cefnogi Siopau Gwledig gan Lywodraeth y Cynulliad wedi helpu’r teulu i drawsnewid adeilad fferm yn siop a fydd yn stocio eu cig eidion ac oen organig eu hunain ynghyd â chadwolion cartref a theisennau, pasteion cig a melysion sy’n cael eu gwneud yn lleol. Western Mail

New organic statistics website

Organic Centre Wales has updated their Organic Statistics website. See www.organic.aber.ac.uk/statistics.

 

Homegrown food

A drive to increase the amount of Welsh produce actually eaten in Wales will be launched by the Welsh Assembly Government in the New Year. A policy commitment on public procurement will be accompanied by a campaign to raise the profile of Welsh food within the tourism and hospitality sector. The initiative is linked to the Organic Farming Scheme for Wales announced by Wales Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones at the annual conference of Organic Centre Wales last week (see below). Revisions to the Welsh Organic Farming Scheme

The Welsh Assembly Government has announced amendments to the Welsh Organic Farming Scheme in order to progress organic farming in Wales. Changes to the scheme are outlined in an OCW factsheet.

 

Lambs to be culled, but none for food

Up to 250,000 healthy Welsh hill lambs will be culled and incinerated in the next few weeks to avoid a welfare disaster. The move follows restrictions imposed during the latest foot and mouth disease outbreak and a similar cull of up to 250,000 lambs now taking place in Scotland. Guardian.  

 

Farm shop brings organics to village

Seven years without a village shop comes to an end for a South Pembrokeshire village at the beginning of next month. The Rogers family has decided to open a farm shop and village stores specialising in organic and local produce. A Welsh Assembly Government Rural Retail Grant has helped the family convert a farm building to house the shop, which will stock their own organic beef and lamb, along with homemade preserves and locally made cakes, meat pies and confectionery. Y mis hwn mae’r ffocws ar Grŵp Tyfwyr Cletwr

 

Grŵp deinamig o dyfwyr organig yw’r Clettwr Growers Group yng Ngheredigion. Mae gan y grŵp 18 o aelodau sydd wedi’u rhannu’n 2 grŵp. Mae hanner y tyfwyr yn gyfrifol am weithredu grŵp marchnadoedd y ffermwyr ac mae’r lleill yn gyfrifol am y broses ardystio. Mae’r grŵp wedi’i ardystio gan y Soil Association trwy gynllun grŵp (dylid nodi nad yw’r cynllun hwn bellach ar gael i grwpiau newydd). Sefydlwyd y grŵp gan Mike Carpenter ym 1999. Roedd Mike Carpenter wedi bod yn arolygydd gyda’r Soil Association am nifer o flynyddoedd pan benderfynodd ymuno â grŵp o ffermwyr.

 

Yn ôl Andy Blair, ysgrifennydd, sefydlwyd y grŵp yn wreiddiol i leihau costau ardystio i’r cynhyrchydd (un o ganlyniadau ardystio grŵp). Fodd bynnag, trwy fod yn rhan o’r grŵp, cododd cyfleoedd eraill megis gwerthu cynnyrch ar y cyd. “Fel grŵp rydych yn gallu gwerthu amrywiaeth ehangach o gynnyrch” meddai Andy Blair.

Bu’r grŵp wrthi’n gwerthu’u cynnyrch trwy farchnad y ffermwyr Aberystwyth a marchnad y ffermwyr Llambed. Mae pawb yn rheoli’r stondinau yn eu tro. “Beth sy’n braf am werthu’ch cynnyrch trwy’r farchnad yw’ch bod yn cael adborth uniongyrchol amdano gan eich cwsmeriaid”.

 

Heblaw am farchnadoedd y ffermwyr, mae gan y rhan fwyaf o’r tyfwyr farchnadoedd eraill hefyd. Bydd rhai ohonynt yn gwerthu’u cynnyrch trwy Calon Wen, Face of Flwers, Organics to go ac Organic Fresh Food Company ac mae gan rai ohonynt eu cynlluniau blychau llysiau eu hunain.

 

Yn ddiweddar, cyhoeddodd y grŵp daflen yn cynnwys trosolwg o’r tyfwyr yn y grŵp. Rhoddir y daflen hon i’w cwsmeriaid. Dywedir ei bod yn helpu i gynyddu’r galw. Yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf mae rhai o’r tyfwyr wedi arallgyfeirio i dyfu cnydau eraill, megis Coed Nadolig organig ac wyau ac mae rhai wedi dechrau ychwanegu gwerth at y cynnyrch trwy brosesu. Enghreifftiau o hyn yw ceuled lemwn a phaté madarch.

 

Maent yn edrych tua’r dyfodol yn gadarnhaol iawn gan obeithio parhau i dyfu a gwerthu cynnyrch organig am amser maith i ddod, ac mae rhai’n edrych i gynyddu’u cynnyrch. Yn ôl Andy Blair: “Mae nifer o dyfwyr cyswllt gan Clettwr Growers Group, tyfwyr sydd mewn cysylltiad â’r grŵp ac sydd weithiau’n darparu peth cynnyrch nad oes gan y grŵp eu hunain. Mae’r tyfwyr cyswllt hyn yn aros i un o aelodau’r grŵp i adael. Maent yn awyddus i ymuno. Yn anffodus, ni chawn ond 10 aelod i bob grŵp.”

 

Mae Andy a Paul yn annog tyfwyr i weithio gyda’i gilydd. “Mae’n anodd cynnal dilyniant y cynnyrch a tharo ymlaen â’n gilydd, “ meddent, “ond rydym yn mwynhau cydweithio’n arw iawn. Mae gweithio â’n gilydd wedi ein helpu i farchnata ein cynnyrch ac wedi golygu ein bod yn gallu rhannu gwybodaeth.” Dylai unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb mewn gwybod mwy amdanom gysylltu ag Andy Blair ar 01545 571344.

The business focus is on Clettwr Growers Group this month

 

The Clettwr Growers Group is a dynamic group of organic growers in Ceredigion. The group has in total 18 members which are divided into two groups. Half of the growers are responsible for the functioning of the farmers’ market group and the others are responsible for the certification process; the group is certified by the Soil Association via a group scheme (please note that this scheme is no longer available for new groups). The group was founded by Mike Carpenter in 1999. Mike Carpenter had been an inspector of the Soil Association for a number of years when he decided to join a group of farmers.

 

Andy Blair, secretary of the group, says that the group was initially set up to reduce certification costs to the producer (a result of group certification). However, by being part of the group other opportunities arose, such as selling produce together. “As a group you are able to sell a wider range of produce” says Andy Blair.

The growers have been selling their produce via Aberystwyth farmers’ market and Lampeter farmers’ market. They have a rota to manage the stalls. “What is good about selling your produce via the market is that you get direct feedback from your customers about the produce”.

 

The majority of growers have, besides the farmers’ markets, other market outlets as well. Some of them sell part of their produce via Calon Wen, Face of Flowers, Organics to Go and Organic Fresh Food Company and some have their own vegetable box scheme.

 

Recently, the group produced a leaflet with an overview of the growers within the group. They provide this to their customers. They say that this helps increase the demand. In recent years, some of the producers have been diversifying into growing other crops, such organic Christmas trees and eggs, and some have started adding value to the produce by processing. Examples of the latter are lemon curd and mushroom pate.

 

They look at the future very positively and hope to continue growing and selling organic produce for a long time to come and some are looking to increase their produce. Andy Blair says: “Clettwr Growers Group has a number of associates, growers who are in contact with the group and sometimes provide some produce the group does not have themselves. The associates are waiting for one of the group members to drop out. They are keen to enter the group. Unfortunately, we can only have 10 members per group.“

 

Both Andy and Paul encourage growers to work together. They say “It is a challenge to keep the continuity of produce and get on with each other, but we very much enjoy working with each other.” “Working together has helped us market our produce and has allowed us to share knowledge”. Bydd llwyddiant Trioni Cyf. wrth gael eu cynnwys yn y contract fframwaith ar gyfer Consortiwm Prynu Cymru – sy’n trafod caffael ar gyfer awdurdodau unedol ar draws de Cymru, yn gweld ei nwyddau llaeth organig â blas, Daioni, ar gael mewn ysgolion ar draws Abertawe a Chastell Nedd Port Talbot gyda’r posibilrwydd o gael ei ddefnyddio gan bob un o’r 12 cyngor dan sylw. “Rydym i gyd ar ben ein digon ein bod wedi ennill y tendr yma i gyflenwi ysgolion yn ardal Consortiwm Prynu Cymru gyda’n nwyddau Daioni, a gafodd eu datblygu er mwyn darparu diod iachus, faethlon i bobl ifanc,” meddai cyd-sefydlydd a rheolwr cyfarwyddwr Trioni, Laurence Harris. Gwobrau caws

Bu Wythnos Caws Gwledydd Prydain yn golygu llwyddiant i wneuthurwyr caws Cymru a fu ymhlith prif enillwyr y gwobrau yng Ngwobrau Caws Gwledydd Prydain. Gweloddd y gwobrau blynyddol 667 o gawsiau’n cystadlu o 175 o wneuthurwyr caws, gyda 98 yn dod o Gymru. Aeth teitl y Caws Cymreig Gorau a noddwyd gan Lywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru a Gwobr Dougal Campbell i Pantysgawn Fine Foods o’r Fenni. Pôl Defnyddwyr Omsco

Prif gasgliadau pôl blynyddol defnyddwyr llaeth organig 2007 oedd mai pryderon ynglŷn â lles anifeiliaid a’r amgylchedd sy’n parhau i ysgogi prynu llaeth organig -- Yr wythnos hon mae Cydweithfa Cyflenwyr Llaeth Organig (OMSCo) wedi cyhoeddi canlyniadau’i pôl ymhlith defnyddwyr ar gyfer 2007. Bu dros 2300 o ddefnyddwyr yn cymryd rhan a datgelodd yr ymchwil fod dros hanner y defnyddwyr yn yr arolwg (55%) yn prynu llaeth organig yn rheolaidd*, gyda bron i 40% yn nodi lles anifeiliaid fel y prif ffactor sy’n eu hysgogi i’w brynu. Er gwaethaf ei boblogrwydd, pan holwyd ynglŷn â phris nid oedd un ym mhob pedwar yn ymwybodol ei bod yn costio llai na £1 yr wythnos i deulu o bedwar newid i laeth organig. www.omsco.co.uk

Y galw am laeth organig “yn ffynnu”

Yn ôl Cymdeithas Cynhyrchwyr Llaeth yr Alban (SOMPA), bydd y galw am laeth organig yn gallu amsugno tua 70-90 miliwn o litrau’n ychwanegol y flwyddyn nesaf. Wrth siarad mewn cynhadledd Coleg Amaethyddol yr Alban yn Dunkeld, meddai Stuart Martin, cynrychiolydd SOMPA, y dylid rheoli ehangu cynhyrchu llaeth organig yn ofalus i osgoi sefyllfa “ffyniant methiant”. Y ffordd i sicrhau hyn fyddai trwy gydweithrediad. Mae cynhyrchu organig yn y DU yn methu o hyd â diwallu’r galw, mae mewnforion o Ddenmarc, Gwlad Belg a’r Iseldiroedd yn helpu i gyflenwi’r galw ond o hyd nid yw’r galw yn y sector corfforaethol a chyhoeddus yn cael ei ddiwallu. Organic milk goes to school

Pembrokeshire dairy company, Trioni Ltd, will be supplying organic flavoured milk to schoolchildren in South Wales. Trioni’s successful inclusion in the framework contract for the Welsh Purchasing Consortium - which handles procurement for unitary authorities across South Wales - will see its Daioni range of organic flavoured milk available in schools across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot with the potential to be used by all 12 councils. “We are all absolutely delighted to have secured this tender to supply schools in the Welsh Purchasing Consortium area with our Daioni products, which were developed to provide a healthy, nutritious drink for young people.” said Trioni’s co-founder and managing director, Laurence Harris. Cheese awards

British Cheese Week was very successful for Welsh cheese makers who were among the top trophy winners at the British Cheese Awards. The annual awards saw 867 cheeses entered from 175 cheese makers, with 98 entries from Wales. The Best Welsh Cheese title, sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government, and the Dougal Campbell Trophy went to Abergavenny Fine Foods’ Pantysgawn Organic. The Monmouthshire company also picked up two gold and three bronze medals for its cheeses. Press release 

 

Omsco’s consumer poll

The main conclusion of the 2007 organic milk consumer poll was that animal welfare and environmental concerns continue to drive organic purchase. The Organic Milk Suppliers Cooperative (OMSCo) this week announces the results of its 2007 consumer poll. Over 2300 consumers took part and the research revealed that over half of consumers surveyed (55%) regularly buy organic milk, with nearly 40% citing animal welfare as the main driving factor for purchase. Despite its popularity, when quizzed on price, one in four were not aware that it costs less than £1 a week for a family of four to switch to organic milk. www.omsco.co.uk

 

Organic milk production data

Kingshay data for Organic herds show a decrease in yield per cow between July and August 2007. An August figure of 20 litres/day is 0.1 litres/day less than July but 1.4 litres/day more than August 2006. The milk price for August of 29.29ppl is 3.9% up on July and 7.3% higher than August last year. Butterfat and protein increased in August to respectively 3.91% and 3.34%. Indicators for August show an improvement on July; the average number of cows in a herd increased 3.4% from 177 in July to 183 in August 2007. This could help to increase overall organic production. Demand for organic milk “booming”

The Scottish Organic Milk Producers Association (SOMPA) says demand for organic milk will be able to absorb an extra 70-90 million litres next year. Speaking at a Scottish Agricultural College conference in Dunkeld, Stuart Martin, a representative from SOMPA, said that expansion of organic milk production should be managed carefully, to avoid a “boom or bust” scenario. The way to achieve this would be through co-operation. Organic production in the UK is still unable to meet demand. Imports from Denmark, Belgium and Holland help to supply demand but supplies are still unable to meet corporate and public sector demand. Organic Inform

Norton Organic Grain reports the market has quieted down. The majority of farmers are using their own feed or feed from a nearby farmer to feed their livestock. In the new year the demand is expected to increase again. Overall, the establishment of the winter crop is good.

British pig farmers may become scarce

Pig farmers say they face huge increases in the price of feed at a time when the value of their animals has plummeted following the recent foot and mouth outbreak. They warn that unless supermarkets raise prices and feed the money back to producers, there will be a widespread disappearance of pig farmers. In a letter to the Telegraph, Stephen Curtis, the chief executive of the leading pig breeders ACMC, said: "Unless action is taken quickly, we're likely to see a mass exodus."

Welsh Field Veg Growers Group

Six growers have come together to diversify into field-grown veg to supply Fenmarc Foods with quality produce for the Welsh home market. Horticulture Network Wales (HNW) together with other organisations are assisting growers with advice and support to be able to grow good quality food for delivery to Fenmarc Prepared Foods Ltd, as well as assisting the growers to create branded Welsh vegetables. Cluster growers planted initial crops in late spring 2007. The launch of regional field vegetables in food stores will take place in October and November of this year. For the 2008 season the growers will increase production and introduce further crops as dictated by the prevalent market at the time. The Carmarthenshire Growers Association

The Carmarthenshire Growers Association was established in 2005 by local growers who felt that by working together, they could raise the profile of the local horticulture sector in the county. (The organic sector is represented by Manse Organics Ltd.) The group started a website, compiled a plant trail guide and established a programme of plant fairs at Bronwydd village hall, Aberglasney Gardens, Carmarthen Museum, Newton House and at the National Botanic Garden. Phoenix delivers on Abel & Cole deal

Organic fruit and vegetable delivery company Abel & Cole has sold a stake in the business to private equity firm Phoenix Equity Partners in a deal that values the business at £30m-£40m. The company has moved into delivering some meat, fish and mayonnaise alongside its organic vegetables to take on the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury and Waitrose. Soil Association licensee Keith Able said, "I want to take our wares to more people, get more of them eating our food, and more farmers growing for us." Daily Telegraph Business

How a family farm grew into a farm of families

Organics in new member states: Bulgaria

Bulgaria joined the EU only this year, but it is currently experiencing a small but constantly increase in organic production which is gaining in importance, most notably in the range of vegetables, wine, herbs and honey. Organic agriculture was introduced to Bulgaria in 1990, when agricultural land was divided into small plots and distributed among the population after the fall of the communism. The EU as well as the government of Bulgaria encouraged the transition to organic farming and subsidised organic farmers and food producers. To be precise it was in 2006 when SAPARD (Special Accession Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development) was introduced in Bulgaria in preparation of accession of the country to the European Union, that farmers receive financial support during the three-year conversion period to organic farming. Currently, 90% of all Bulgarian organic food is exported to wealthier EU member states. It is assumed that currently about 60% of raw materials come from ‘wild collection’. More

The importance of organic farming is growing in Romania. According to new data published in May, a total of 3,092 organic farmers and food traders were registered in 2006 (estimation: 3400. The organically farmed area increased from 110,400 ha to 143,000 ha during the last year (estimation for 2006: 170,000 ha). However, actual numbers are likely to be higher and thus closer to the previous estimations since some certified organic farmers are not registered with the government. Furthermore, organic management includes 38,000 ha of ‘wild collection’. More

 

Official: organic really is better

Results from a big study into organic food has found that it is more nutritious than ordinary produce and may help to lengthen people's lives. The study found that organic fruit and vegetables contained as much as 40% more antioxidants, which scientists believe can cut the risk of cancer and heart disease, Britain’s biggest killers. They also had higher levels of beneficial minerals such as iron and zinc. The Times 

 

New Organic Exchange Report

Highlights from the forthcoming report of Organic Exchange were released at the Annual Conference and Marketplace attended by over 330 professionals from 39 countries representing the entire global organic fibre supply chain. According to the "Organic Exchange Organic Cotton Market Report 2007," global retail sales for organic cotton products increased 85% to $ 1.1 billion in 2006, and are projected to increase 83% to $ 1.9 billion by the end of 2007. More
