Welsh organic farming statistics 2003:

Organic food and farming in Wales has experienced considerable growth over the past five years. Organic Centre Wales has produced a range of statistics and market intelligence materials to inform farmers, agencies, and the public about the opportunities and challenges facing the organic movement in Wales.

The Welsh organic market in figures, 2002/03

  • 54,306 hectares were managed organically in April 2003. 41,381 hectares were in fully organic production, and 12,925 hectares were in conversion

  • Welsh organically managed land grew by over 900 per cent between 1999 and 2003

  • There are 618 licensed organic producers and growers

  • There are 103 licensed organic processors (manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, abattoirs etc.)

  • Organic livestock: in April 2003, there were around 5,700 organic cows, 65,000 lambs in Wales, 50,000 ewes, and just under 100,000 table birds

  • Organic dairy - approximately 36 million litres of organic milk were marketed by Welsh producers in 2002/03, compared with 10 million litres in 2000/01.

  • Organic horticulture covers 513 hectares – 10 per cent of the total Welsh horticultural production

  • Organic arable land accounts for 1,648 hectares of full organic land – 4 per cent of the fully organic land in Wales

  • The organic retail market in Wales and the surrounding counties was in the region of £64 million in 2002/03

  • Market research indicates that Welsh consumers express a strong belief in supporting local farmers - more than in any other region of the UK

  • Welsh organic consumers are less 'put off' by the price of organic food
